...then, are we so willing to celebrate European colonialism in America? Needless to say, Columbus Day is not designed to commemorate Chris Columbus's personal success in bumbling into a "new" continent. It's meant to pay tribute to the European "discovery" of America, the first step in the creation of the European colonies here. In that way, it is a tribute to American colonialism...

...Needless to say, the new Portuguese government, bent on freeing its colonial possessions, did not fall over itself thanking the U.S. for its support. And, by isolating itself from the national liberation movements during the pre-independence period in Angola, the U.S. eliminated its chances of playing a constructive mediating role among the various political factions to help bring Angola toward independence through a negotiated, democratic transition. Instead, the U.S. attempted to regain a political foothold in Angola through covert support of the poorly organized, politically suspect FLNA and UNITA forces...

Nothing we could say would change her mind, so she went up to Moscow and married him in this drab, crummy ceremony. But just before she was due to go off to the Siberia Hilton or some place for a candlestein honeymoon, something happened, and Christina suddenly left Moscow and showed up at her villa in Athens. Well, I haven't had a chance to get through to her on the phone from here...

...cutting specific programs that benefit their own constituents, most lawmakers run for cover. One egregious case: Impact Aid, an ever expanding relic of the 1940s. Almost everyone in Washington agrees that it should be sharply reduced, but Congress is moving to expand it, adding well over $200 million in needless expenditures to next year's projected budget deficit of $48.5 billion. Having examined the tangled story of Impact Aid, TIME Washington Economic Correspondent George Taber filed this report...
