...course's lax atmosphere extends to Wood's lectures, which are full of pithy asides and sexy Briticisms. (Nota bene: to understand the jokes, you needn't do the reading.) If you feel compelled to read the novels, you'll find some jewels that most English concentrators have never heard of. Among the best are Henry Green's “Loving” and Muriel Spark's “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.” Unfortunately, Wood spends almost a month on “Atonement” by Ian McEwan, which is taught...

...Range - as a storyteller, not a journalist - needn't make excuses. For one thing, there's a simple justification for speculating on Bush's possible death: a strange mathematical coincidence. Since 1840, the previous nine presidents elected in a year divisible by 20 has either been killed (four), died in office of natural causes (four) or, like Reagan, been the victim of an assassin's bullet. Bush, declared the winner of the 2000 election, is next in line...

...good news is, once mercury is removed from circulation, it needn't trouble us again. As long as it's held in double-hulled containers and kept relatively cool to prevent evaporation, it is largely inert. "It's my favorite chemical for what you can finally do with it," says Greer. "It will sit placidly in a warehouse at under 70 degrees." It's a remarkably quiet end for a remarkably dangerous metal--an end that can't be too soon in coming...

Despite the obvious expense of this production, it is an austere film, which has a little trouble, at its conclusion, trying to make some large generalizations about its meaning. It needn't have bothered. Its simple message is implicit in its actions--and its helpless inactions. There are reports that the political right, to whom Stone has long been an anathema, is trying to lay claim to the movie. But that is nonsense. What liberal would want to deny the compassion and courage of working-class heroes whom the left embraced, historically, long before the right? Very simply, World Trade...

...Mike Bumgarner, who oversees the detention camps on a day-to-day basis, several prisoners have told him of a"vision, or a dream - implicitly a message from God - that if three detainees die it will attract enough attention so that they will all get out of Guantanamo." It needn't be by starvation: according to newly declassified docouments, two prisoners, one of whom was al-Shehri, tried to commit suicide on May 18 by swallowing hoarded anti-anxiety medication. Those attempts triggered a search, which in turn led to the most serious rioting in the history of Camp Delta...
