...Jewish people under tyrants from Torquemada through Hitler, do not feel that the U.S. is obliged to guarantee the territorial integrity of Israel. Don't give us any more of that "because it is right" jive. I don't want my son dumping his guts on the Negev sand in the interests of Zionism, and I think most Americans feel the same...

Archaeologists have long been intrigued by the heaps of brownish-gray slag scattered amid the sandy soil of Israel's southern Negev Desert. First spotted by the late American biblical scholar and archaeologist Nelson Glueck, the heaps seemed to be remnants of an ancient copper-smelting operation of pre-Roman origin. Now, after excavating at the site with a team of West German mining experts, Israeli Archaeologist Beno Rothenberg reports that the slag is only the tip of an archaeological treasure. A short distance away, he says, is the oldest underground mining system ever found...

...used, were not made until the time of the Romans, who mined everything from Spanish silver to British iron and Near Eastern copper. Rothenberg's discovery just about destroys that theory. From the stone hammers, bronze chisels and a cooking pot found in the labyrinthian tunnels of the Negev mine, he concludes that the mine dates back to 1400 B.C. -near the end of the Bronze Age and more than a millennium before Rome's large-scale mining endeavors...

Israel also could quickly become a nuclear power. Since the late 1950s it has had a large atomic reactor at Dimona in the Negev desert; the reactor has been turning out enough fissionable material over the past ten years to build at least one Hiroshima-size bomb annually. Because a bomb can be physically assembled in a matter of weeks if all materials are ready, Israel for all practical purposes could already have...

...result is a sort of Noah's park. Located in the Negev Desert, near the Jordanian border, the 8,000-acre Hai Bar reserve now contains about 100 species of biblical animals, many of them on the verge of extinction. To collect them, Yoffe undergoes almost biblical trials. Arab governments routinely refuse, for political reasons, to sanction the shipment of animals to Israel. Yoffe once got round this problem by paying Bedouin hunters in the Judean hills to catch him 15 Nubian ibexes, one by one. But he still yearns for a pair of wild Arabian oryxes (a kind...
