...other members of the community have a say over the conduct of services provided to them flagrantly denies democratic principles. It also defies a principle individuals of any political persuasion can agree on: consumer sovereignty. Is Harvard that cynical about the brand of economics it teaches--to the neglect of what more than half the world's economists pursue--that it will refute daily that theory's fundamental assumptions? I am afraid that one of the most important lessons of the Harvard experience will be how far social institutions are from real democracy, and how little say the average consumer...
...Switzerland. Years later the state of Israel saluted the work of Le Chambon during "the epoch of extermination" and awarded a Medal of Righteousness to Protestant Clergyman André Trocmé, who inspired the village in its resistance to evil. A save-Athens ministry, which will soon begin functioning, will propose heavy taxes to discourage in-migration, and a minimum of $5 billion in public spending for Athens alone. The ministry will also have an extensive investment program for rural areas to encourage residents to stay put. A master plan that will move many government offices to the city...
...onto another, he did so to praise the world of work and its appropriate tools, to give sculpture a new standing as the product of labor rather than the emblem of luxury or abstract power. As a result, his work- or what survives of it after decades of neglect in Russia -as a singular freshness about it: plain, optimistic lingo, a kind of sophisticated visual slang...
