After three years in Washington, Bennett was promoted to Secretary of Education by Reagan. Bennett immediately took on the teachers' unions, the granting of taxpayer-subsidized loans to middle-class students who used them for stereos and cars, and the neglect of the basics in schools and colleges. He promoted "the three Cs": content, character and parental choice in public schools. President Reagan observed during one Cabinet meeting, "I see that Bill here is in trouble again with the Washington Post." He paused, then added, "So what's wrong with the rest...
...hard to complain about a bipartisan consensus in favor of goodness. Certainly its premises are too grave to dismiss. Rates of divorce and out-of-wedlock birth are indeed appalling, as are the related rates of child abuse and neglect. Songs celebrating rape and murder are not the hallmark of a healthy culture. Still, it's fair to ask whether something as ideologically jumbled as the new politics of virtue can ultimately prove coherent. Can liberals and conservatives so easily embrace the same ideas without surrendering bedrock beliefs? Or, in fact, might a real moral recovery entail some bitter medicine...
Parts of the Dahshur site were first excavated 101 years ago by French archaeologist Jacques de Morgan, though few visitors ever saw the area. Little was done to build on his work during most of this century, however, and the site fell into neglect. And it's coming back after years of neglect. The colonization of Mars, for example--a quintessential hard sci-fi subject--inspired Kim Stanley Robinson's Blue Mars (Bantam). The third volume in his acclaimed Mars trilogy, it's a painstakingly plotted epic that follows a group of pioneers across centuries as they transform the Red Planet into an ecologically friendly refuge. "We're acting as the conscience and subconscious...
Each year the National Trust for Historic Preservation prepares a new list of "America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places." These are threatened by neglect, demolition or insensitive public policy. This time, however, the trust is adding a 12th: black churches of the South, more than 30 of which have been ravaged by arsonists since January 1995. Others on the just-released list include...
