...Hoffman was nibbling at a problem which many economists feel will inevitably scuttle the value of any economic aid we send to Europe, at least on a short-run basis. Europe, partially due to war damage, partially to technical immaturity, can produce neither as cheaply nor as efficiently as the U.S. This means it cannot trade with us in a particularly equal give and take footing. But this situation is even further aggravated by the myriad trade barriers and currency controls still stretched onto the containment; these restrictions are actively preventing what Hoffman calls the "resumption of normal healthy trade...

...York City, which enjoys a good show, was having a pleasantly lively time in the mayoralty campaign. Neither greying, genial Democratic Mayor Bill O'Dwyer, nor his Republican-Liberal-Fusion challenger, Newbold Morris, could find any real excuse to call each other hard names. Suggesting those legendary tales involving both an agonizing decision and the guts to see it through, Montserrat is a kind of moral duel between cynicism at its most brutal and idealism at its most impassioned. Both themes suit the stage, neither quite fills it, and Montserrat has been fattened up by giving the six pawns in the game their grim, gaudy exit scenes as people. As melodrama, Montserrat, though sometimes talky, is oftener tense. As writing, it has much of Adapter Hellman's sharpness and bite: in particular, her villain (well-played by Emlyn Williams) brings a fine sardonic...
