...what the Gunmen lacked in David Duchovnian sex appeal, they made up for in popularity with vocal X-philes. They served as Mulder and Scully's nerd consiglieri, lending their computer geekspertise to the alien-hunting agents. And their deadpan delivery and off-the-wall conspiracy postulates (for instance, about the magnetic strip the government plants in dollar bills to track you) made a hilarious foil to Mulder and Scully's G-man gravitas. In 1997 producer Vince Gilligan conceived an episode around the three; another followed the next season. Eventually Carter, Gilligan and two other X-Files producers sold...
...Nerd mystique, it seems, did not crash with the NASDAQ, and from the Internet to Iraq to Kosovo, remote control is our society's preferred means of combat. So if yesterday's Army grunts had G.I. Joe, what better model for tomorrow's push-button conquistadors than these butt-whuppin' machine masters? A former FORTUNE writer, Martin gives us a real biography, one that winds through Greenspan's geeky youth (band, glee club, math nerd) to his stint as a professional clarinet player and time spent in the inner circle of author Ayn Rand, and then to his advisory role with Presidents Nixon and Ford. Along the way we learn that Greenspan is yet another powerful political figure who was in the room but didn't inhale, and that as a child he was terrified of the movie Frankenstein. We also get plenty of quotable...
...Danny King. "He does nothing but chess." Kramnik, 25, gave up smoking and lost 20 lbs. to prepare for the physical and emotional rigors of championship chess, which can produce Patrick Ewing-like levels of sweat in competitors. "This match was won by Vladimir's excellent preparation," said ordinary nerd Kasparov, who has been top chess champ for 15 years. "I was outplayed not at the board but in the preparation." Tell it to Deep Blue...
