...writing in response to comments in an article “The Ethics of Boycotting” (oped, Feb. 6) In particular, we take issue with the statement: “Nestl?? has capitalized on the fears of HIV/AIDS infected mothers in Africa, urging them to buy formula for their children, which often results in these children’s deaths because of missed nutrition from the lack of breastfeeding...
...This Statement is untrue. Nestl?? fully supports the UNAIDS/UNICEF/WHO collaborative policy statement on HIV and Infant Feeding. This Statement, while protecting breastfeeding also recognizes that HIV can be transmitted by breastfeeding. The statement thus recognises that if infants born to HIV-positive women can be ensured uninterrupted access to nutritionally adequate, safely prepared breast-milk substitutes, they are at less risk of illness or death if they are not breast-fed. Accordingly, we sell formula at low prices to governments, for use in official programs for the prevention of transmission of HIV from mothers to babies, only...
Parvin Heydari, an Iranian mother of two, was flipping back and forth between the nightly news and Oprah when a bulletin on an Iranian state channel caught her attention. Put them on a truck, and run them south. They're out there covering their asses." Vultaggio gloats about the fate of Snapple, once a proud independent like Arizona, that was swallowed and spit out by Quaker Oats and is now part of Cadbury-Schweppes...
...timing couldn't be worse for the chocolate industry. A week before Valentine's Day, Nestl??, Cargill and Archer Daniels Midland--the cocoa suppliers for virtually every major chocolate producer in the U.S.--will have to show up in court to answer for allegedly supporting child slavery on West African farms, where 70% of the world's cocoa is grown. The hearing, set for this week in Los Angeles, stems from a lawsuit filed by the International Labor Rights Fund, which is also taking aim at another Valentine's Day staple: lovely bouquets that happen to be laden with pesticides...
