...picking Emmy winners, there's no substitute for old-fashioned cynicism. Phil Rosenthal, accepting the best comedy trophy for Everybody Loves Raymond, said it all: Emmys do not go to hip, edgy shows. And the Emmys (decided largely by people who make their livings in un-hip, un-edgy network TV) do not give series awards to cable shows. So what if The West Wing stank last year? It takes the Emmy voters at least three years to find out that a show stinks. The only thing the producers of The West Wing could have done to lose the Emmy...
...centuries-old hostility to authority, Waziristan is a fitting bolt-hole for Islamic militants, possibly even al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden. U.S. intelligence believes he is hiding somewhere near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, 150 miles of which snake along Waziristan's frontier. Last week the Qatari TV network, al-Jazeera, aired a videotape of bin Laden walking with his lieutenant Ayman al-Zawahiri in rugged hills that look like those in much of the border area. One investigator, who wished to remain anonymous, says German...
...last well over a decade. But these critics ignore the fact that new technology is available that will virtually eliminate both of these problems—the current proposal is for broadcasting over existing Ethernet lines, not rewiring, which is ideal for Harvard due to our high-capacity Ethernet network. With an Ethernet connection already in every student’s room, “Sex and The City” and “The Sopranos” can be piped to our desktops at a fraction of the cost of traditional installation...
...years ago Northwestern University was also plagued by old buildings and insurmountable cable installation costs; but their administration found a creative solution. Partnering with a local technology company, VideoFurnace, Northwestern launched their own “Cable via the Ethernet” network. This term marks the one-year anniversary of their experiment, and it has worked with astonishing results. After starting with only 20 channels in 2002, Northwestern is now looking to expand its programming to include services such as HBO and Pay-Per-View. There is no reason that Harvard cannot follow suit...
