...Where are some of the places they uncovered artworks? Some were in castles like Neuschwanstein in Bavaria. The Veit Stoss altarpiece [a 15th century three-story wooden altarpiece and Polish national treasure] was in a tunnel in Nuremburg. The Nazis built false walls into castles. The mining system in Germany is extensive, so they also hollowed out salt and copper mines and built racks all the way around...
...Cornell, making art was the most private activity imaginable. It set him free, but the freedom was that of the puritan aristocrat, not the anticlerical rebel. He was the exquisite ruler of little boxes, an incomparably more gifted Ludwig II who constructed his Neuschwanstein-swans, grottoes, secret chambers, opera house and permanent twilight-in the space of half a cubic foot...
...other is the only thing that really interests him. It is thus natural for him to see Ludwig's molars as the mirror of his soul, while ignoring the fact that quite another side of the royal character was expressed in such glorious excesses as the romantic Schloss Neuschwanstein, the rococo Linderhof, and the unfinished imitation of Versailles, Schloss Herrenchiemsee. Ludwig's two other palaces both evoke the rococo splendors of Louis XIV of France. From Linderhof come tutti-frutti-colored, specially commissioned Sèvres porcelain, embroidered screens inspired...
...Neuschwanstein catalogs listed 21,000 items, including choice canvases by Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Fragonard, Boucher, Veronese; boxes of exquisite Renaissance jewelry, fine Tanagra figurines, antique carved ivory clocks, rich tapestries. Because files of orderly records and correspondence were captured intact at Neuschwanstein, the castle's contents may well be the most important cache of looted art yet to come to light in Europe...
