Thankfully, fiction is more entertaining than life. The Andromeda Strain tells of how a group of super-scientists (at least one of whom is a toned-down version of J. D. Watson) set to work in a secret, five-story, underground bacterial research center in Nevada--part of "Project Wildfire." Their object is to identify and neutralize a lethal virus brought back from the upper atmosphere by a Scoop satellite that has crashed in the middle of the Arizona desert. Since the enterprising virus multiplies at a giddy rate, they must, of course, do in the thing by the time...
Unlimited Liability. As his under secretary in charge of legislation, he appointed Russell E. Train, a noted conservationist. Hickel stopped developers from wiping out Nevada's Pyramid Lake, habitat of the Paiute Indians. He blocked a builder's plan that threatened to further pollute the Potomac. He sponsored a pilot project uniting three seashore areas around New York Harbor, the first of a series of urban national parks. He dreams of combatting auto fumes with 150-m.p.h. commuter trains: "From five miles out, you'd be downtown quicker than if you drove...
Campus disorders? Nevada Southern University in Las Vegas has eleven fraternities and sororities, but no S.D.S. chapter. Racial riots? The 30,000 Negroes who live in Las Vegas' west-side black ghetto have not yet even discovered the sit-in. Hippies and drugs? Rare in Vegas. MARIJUANA-THE SOCIAL ASSASSIN, read the billboards that District Attorney George Franklin has erected along the main drag. Townsfolk are still chuckling about what happened to the two hirsute, peace-bead types whom a deputy sheriff discovered on The Strip a month or so ago. He drove them out into the desert, pointed...
Nevadans have always clung to mildly iconoclastic notions about what is and what isn't a vice. Gambling is legal in Nevada; everybody knows that. Less well known is the fact that prostitution is also tolerated in 15 out of the state's 17 counties.* In such communities as Elko, Esmeralda and Nye, the brothel is practically an institution, like the corner drugstore and the county courthouse. Overall, one involved Nevadan opines, there are 30 to 40 brothels, with seven to ten girls apiece, in the 15 permissive counties. The opulence (or lack of it) of these industries...
...bordello business currently seems to be booming. According to the Los Angeles Times, "prostitution is one of the biggest industries in rural Nevada." State officials are appropriately heavy-lidded as long as appropriate taxes are paid. "I can't tell you anything about prostitution in Nevada," Attorney General Harvey Dickerson told Reporter Charles Hillinger. "I personally don't interfere with it where it exists." One of the "wheres" is Lida Junction on Highway 95, about midway between Reno and Las Vegas. Lida Junction cannot be found on most road maps; it consists of an airstrip and a house...
