Very rarely do I read anything that justifies writing a letter to the editor. However, William P. Bohlen's piece on Max Patkin (Sports, Nov. 3) was a delight. Bohlen depicted Patkin and his antics in a vivid and nostalgia-provoking manner. Even those who had never seen his performance--which I consider myself fortunate to have done on several occasions--could truly picture one of baseball's "greats." I wish mainstream media sources had taken the same time that you obviously did. Nice work...

I see now how every decision I make is affected by my being a woman, how it affects my place at this school, on this planet, and in my mind. Williams sings a song entitled "When I Was a Boy," which focuses on the jolting change from androgynous youth to adolescent and adult society, where gender determines rules for behavior and lifestyle...
...Ditto (Paul Kerry), the mayor's would-be right-hand man, and so on, and so on. Though there is some fine acting in the mix, none of these characters is on stage long enough to provide more than a suggestion of local color. Indeed, since these minor players never develop beyond mere "snapshots," one wonders if The Last Hurrah might have been better realized as a Broadway musical, Ragtime style...
...such delicate subject matter? The real-life Wigand and Bergman, the two protagonists of the film, have not objected to Mann's portrayals of themselves and their stories. However, Bergman says his character in the film is "too neat" to really be him, and Wigand has said that he never quite sunk to the emotional depths that his character reached. Pacino has even been quoted as saying that his character, Bergman, "was a composite of three or four people in Michael's and [co-writer] Eric Roth's mind...
