Soldiering On Adam Ferguson's excellent photography brought it all back home [Oct. 12]. Medevacs removing the wounded, sentries monitoring the perimeter, soldiers shaving with whatever was available - Vietnam all over again. Until the U.S. leadership looks at our history, we will never learn from our mistakes. I was in the eighth grade when the first Tennessee soldier was killed in Vietnam in 1962, and 10 years later I was fortunate to return from service with the 1st Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam. Let's hope the decision makers review Ferguson's work while examining the war in Afghanistan. Bryce...
...find the essay "American Lament" rather disturbing. In the past year, I've heard enough media reports on China, the next superpower, but I've never seen an article by Chinese media labeling China a superpower, nor do I sense the Chinese government has the intention of taking over the U.S. as the world's sole superpower. Indeed, Chinese people are proud of our country's success, but we have been humble despite all the fuss over China's rise. Insecurity, which is very discernible in Michael Schuman's article, will not disappear by attacking another country's success. Yang...
...described as saying, in English, "Please go get me some smokes, angel." Yet the facts beneath the noirish lines are assembled with what looks to be ferocious diligence and resourcefulness. "You're stupid, obtuse, stubborn and reckless," a hood he calls Cyclops tells him at a clandestine meeting in a transit lounge at Hong Kong's airport, "but at the end of the day, I guess...
...what if Sarkozy has a point? After all, the figure at which he was taking aim - gross domestic product - was never intended to gauge anything other than how much money was changing hands. Yet we routinely use economic growth as shorthand for how well a country is doing. If we're going to use a metric to track our progress, shouldn't we choose something that measures the things we care about? (See pictures of President Sarkozy...
India and China have never been close, but of late they have become engaged in increasingly sharp rounds of diplomatic thrust and parry. In September, India signaled its approval of a planned visit by the Dalai Lama to the border town of Tawang, the site of a famous Tibetan Buddhist monastery - a move that China interpreted as a provocation. Beijing then objected to a visit by Manmohan Singh, the Indian Prime Minister, to Arunachal Pradesh, claiming it was part of Tibet, which belongs to China. Outraged that China presumed to tell an Indian leader not to go to territory legally...
