...specify it; we fabricate it," boasted the Industrial Welding Co. on a sign flanking Newark's Ferry Street. Industrial had in mind smokestacks, chemical tanks and it gave an idea to Sculptor Tony Smith, who passed the sign whenever he drove from his home in South Orange, N.J., to Manhattan. So, one day eight years ago, he picked up the phone and ordered a sculpture...
...still lifes intimate. Portraits, by their very nature, are personal. But the seascape must represent the aloof and detached ocean, and it is this defiant refusal to bend to man's control that has driven painters to conquer the sea on canvas. In a refreshing summertime exhibit, the Newark Museum has mounted two dozen marine paintings that show the various ways in which 19th century artists sensed the waters' many moods...

After the second week, Gibson will lose his moderate support. Eventually, he will just be another mayor in trouble." And, he might have added, black officeholders will some day provide the final...
Perhaps most interesting were the large number of union executives such as the Vice President of the International Association of Firefighters, or the Chairman of the Black Caucus of Local 481 of the American Federation of Teachers in Newark. Conspicuous by their absence on the list of sponsors were the Black Panther Party, Students for a Democratic Society, and the Progressive Labor Party...
