Over the past five months, TIME's James Nachtwey has documented the resurgence of TB in seven countries. Turning back the epidemic will require not just newer and more effective drugs but also better ways to detect the disease and a renewed commitment to expanding existing TB-treatment programs. In June the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended a new, rapid test for TB that can provide results in as little as two days. But for most TB-ravaged nations, adopting the technique will require upgrading lab facilities. That's not easy, but it's something WHO hopes will ultimately help...
...otherwise essentially overlooked cultures, but does well to remove, in a small way, that culture from the context of contemporary history. And like those decals on the walls at Twisted Village, there is a beauty and a fascination with art that, ripped from its context, has taken on newer, more symbolic beauty...
...correction comes less than a year after the United Nations made a similar announcement, acknowledging last November that its AIDS-battling agency, UNAIDS, had overstated its estimates of the global HIV burden by about 6 million cases; that agency revised its numbers also based on newer and more accurate surveys. At the time, the U.N. came under fire from critics for inflating its estimates in order to exaggerate the urgency of the epidemic - and to spur bigger donations...
...cutting malaria illness and death. Since 2000, all of them have managed a greater than 50% drop in both rates, and all of them have done it through a combination of familiar methods: using long-lasting insecticidal bed nets to prevent mosquito bites; treating the disease with the newer, more effective artemisinin-based combination drug therapy; and spraying homes with insecticide. In these countries, there is little doubt that interventions are working, but the impact doesn't translate to a measurable reduction in global figures because the populations involved are relatively small. Larger countries like Nigeria have been slower...
...types of medications they take," says Campos. "Diabetes is a consequence of being overweight, but [another complication] is having to take medications that add to weight gain. It's a double-edged sword, and a vicious cycle." The solution, he points out, may be to rely on newer anti-diabetes drugs, such as the DPP-IV inhibitors (like Januvia, the first to receive FDA approval), that can help patients keep their blood sugar and weight under control. "We can have even better results in controlling diabetes after gastric bypass surgery if we change the way we manage diabetes until these...
