Rent may or may not have revolutionized the Broadway musical, but the form certainly is attracting some interesting playwrights. David Mamet is helping revamp the book for Randy Newman's Faust, which made its debut to much fanfare at California's La Jolla Playhouse last year and will resurface Sept. 30 at Chicago's Goodman Theatre. (Look for long, circular conversations between Faust and the devil.) Terrence McNally (Master Class) is tackling the book for Ragtime, a musical based on E.L. Schumacher's timing was perfect. Hungry for a star who didn't display a grungy ambivalence about fame and adulation, the media couldn't resist the hunky newcomer, proclaiming him heir to Cruise, Newman and Brando. The campaign was ably abetted by McConaughey, whom the camera adores and who seems happy to project old-style Hollywood magic. Suddenly McConaughey was everywhere. But Bowe's supporters, including promoter Rock Newman, stormed the ring, one of them smashing Golota over the head with a mobile phone. The crowd, smelling blood, started melees of its own, throwing chairs and punches until police regained sufficient control to make 10 arrests...

All the while, Bowe was laying on the canvas, protected by his manager Rock Newman. It took about 35 minutes for police to restore order. Twenty-two people suffered minor injuries and eight people, including Golota's trainer, Lou Duva, were hospitalized. Ten people were arrested. Many ringside observers described the event as the worst boxing-related riot they had seen. The Garden, which...
