...side house in Newport Beach, Calif., Wayne, in Clark Kent disguise, recalled his spiral career in a series of flashbacks to TIME Reporter Jay Cocks. Iowa-born kid turned U.S.C. football star,, the former Marion Morrison began in films as a part-time prop man. He fell into bottom-of-the-bill cowboy pictures and made a few better-forgotten films in civilian clothes. "They had a college picture about girls playing basketball," he recalls. "The man in charge was a little dance director. Everything he did was by the count?one, two, three, four?and then your line...
Unfortunately, things have been wrong more often than right at rock festivals across the U.S. this summer. In June, the Newport '69 Festival outside Los Angeles was disrupted repeatedly as gangs of toughs and pseudo toughs crashed the gates by the thousands, threw sticks, bottles and rocks at the police. At the Denver Pop Festival the next weekend, gate crashers lobbed firecrackers, bottles and debris at the police and the police threw tear gas. ...JUST received a letter from a Cliffe in Paris, who says that she does, indeed, love it "in the summer, when it sizzles." I'm glad for her. In Newport on Thursday night it wasn't sizzling; it wasn't even drizzling, it was more of a slow drip (and I began to think I knew what it was like for my coffee grounds every morning.) ...artist in Chicago; it was tough for a Negro to find a job in a white agency. In the past three years, the rise of black consciousness has turned his color into an asset. His agency now bills an estimated $1.5 million a year from accounts that include Kent, Newport and True cigarettes, Wayne-Gossard Corp. and the Joe Louis Milk Co. His ads are characterized by what he calls "a pride in being black." One magazine layout for Afro-Sheen, a hair preparation that is supposed to enhance the natural, curly look, carries the headline: "A beautiful new product...
...yards have so far built nothing greater than 109,000 d.w.t. but Bethlehem Steel and Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock are gearing up to turn out tankers in the 200,000-d.w.t. class. Even those will seem small next to the foreign-built ships of the future. Japan's Nippon Kokan next month will open a dock that can accommodate an 800,000-tonner, and Belfast's Harland & Wolff is constructing a new facility that should be able to handle a million-d.w.t. vessel...
