...after another touched their draft cards to a flickering candle. After watching the cards blaze down to finger-burning remains, they dropped the charred stubs in a silver bowl and shook hands with the Rev. William Sloane Coffin. Shown in a darkened Boston federal courtroom last week, the TV newsreel was offered by a federal prosecutor as part of the evidence against Yale Chaplain Coffin, 43, Pediatrician Benjamin Spock, 65, and three codefendants, all charged with conspiracy...
...cattle, Maseratis, naked girls, the opportunity to break children's arms and inform on innocents. At last they are persuaded, and go off to conquer the world. It is not long, of course, before the world conquers them. Against photographer Raoul Coutard's haunted landscapes -interrupted by newsreel footage of atrocities and death - they loot and plunder, lifting skirts and wallets, but growing steadily poorer...
...does seem, as your Mr. Glassman would have it, that the Columbia protestors are getting poor press coverage, and in the certitude of his position he becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Newsreel cameras recorded the assassination of Yugoslavia's King Alexander in Marseille in 1934, as well as the death of the assassin at the hands of a mob. The Normandy invasion was photographed in all its awesome spectacle and desperate tension. And then there was that time a newsreel man confronted John D. Rockefeller Sr. "Say something," said the newsman, grinding away. Said Rockefeller: "God bless Standard...
