...limited to the countryside, and is sarcastic about the setbacks she has suffered since arriving in Beijing. Nonetheless, when opportunities come calling, she is nothing but youthful gratitude: "I gave him my ID number, my Young Pioneers Cinema number, my mobile phone number, my home number and my next-door neighbor's phone number." Guo's tender portrayal of one of youth's abiding contradictions - its simultaneous scorn and passionate appetite for the world - is one of the novel's pleasures. Apart from Fenfang's genuine love of food, this is what the ravenousness of the title is about...
...works on its own (although House is better than Garden), but each enhances the other. House revolves mainly around the shaky marriage between Teddy Platt (David Haig), the estate's owner, and his wife Trish (Jane Asher), who is giving him the silent treatment after discovering his affair with next-door neighbor Joanna (Sian Thomas). Teddy is desperate to patch things up before a prominent, politically connected writer arrives for lunch, presumably to urge him to run for Parliament. I came from a dysfunctional family where my mother was a prostitute, she was a heroin addict and then my mother became infected with the HIV virus and she passed it to my baby brother and they both died from the AIDS virus. I had another brother...
...they had no desire to be with a woman, they always knew that they were attracted to men. It just so happened that in my instance and my situation, I had not had a desire or thought of being with another man until I was molested by the male next-door neighbor. An incident helped spark, I would say, or created an opening for me to start questioning or start experimenting. There was a male in my group who I used to hang out with as a kid. And for the first time I looked at him, and I thought...
