Italian politics in the days of ruthless Lorenzo the Magnificent and astute Niccolo Machiavelli were scarcely more tortuous than German politics today. Last week a fog of intrigue hung thick over official Berlin as a swarm of airplane-riding Nazis (Fascists) flocked vulture-like to the Capital. Their meat was the sudden resignation of Germany's autocratic and aristocratic Cabinet, headed by Oberst-leutnant (Lieut.-Colonel) Franz von Papen, mosthated Chancellor in modern German history...
...picture shows the sweet and grave dignity typical of Bellini, but it is almost certainly the work of one of his pupils, perhaps Niccolo Rondinelli. In the Layard collection of the National Gallery is another version, differing only in that the Madonna's hood is more elaborately embroidered and that there is more of the landscape visible on the left. Brady Jr., was not, as history has imagined him, a murderous medieval wardheeler but on the contrary, a single-hearted patriot whose love-life was unfortunate. An overwritten text and an overdressed cast somehow made it seem improbable, uninteresting...

In celebration of the Norton centenary he now gives both of these pictures outright to the Fogg Museum, one in memory of Charles Eliot Norton, his teacher, the other in memory of Richard Norton, son of Professor Norton and friend of Mr. Forbes...
...Born at Florence in 1469 at the apogee of Florentine glory under Lorenzo de Medici ("The Magnificent"), Niccolo Machiavelli remains the most celebrated commentator on the brilliant and ruthless statesmanship of the Borgia, Sforza and Medici. When the Prince was translated into English many an Anglo-Saxon was appalled that so many truths about the baseness of men and how to play upon it should ever have been set down in type. Machiavelli was suspected by simple souls of having been the devil himself, and the adjective "Machiavellian" was introduced into English with the connotation "diabolic." Machiavellian maxims...
