Nunnally Johnson, one of Hollywood's surest-footed scripters (The Grapes of Wrath, Holy Matrimony), slithers about rather badly on Broadway. The World's Full of Girls has nice dialogue, some pleasant scenes. But it suggests a wobbly coupling of two plays rather than a dramatization of one novel. Half of it portrays a large Brooklyn family addicted to quarrels and adorned "with quirks; the other half describes the punctured-and-repaired romance of two outsiders...
...Aviv, built mainly by American Zionists, is also an attraction. Says Chaplain Morrison: "It is the nearest thing to the U.S. that you will find in the Near East. Almost everyone speaks English. You'll hear many a Bronx accent. There are nice-looking girls, excellent beaches, and best of all, good cold beer. A bottle of Pabst Blue Ribbon coming out of the desert is quite a treat...
Politicians make a habit of saying things that will please almost everybody, and Mayor Tobin had a made-to-order situation at the football writers' luncheon, so be said just what everybody wanted: It was a great game, and it's nice that neither team was beaten. That more or less covered the situation, for B. C.'s visit to the Stadium had resulted in a hard-hitting, exciting contest that made up in crowd appeal what it may have lacked in finesse. A quick look at the statistics will show that 6-6 was a fair score...
