...contempt for its audience, the film cannot be bothered with such nice ties as acting. Men like Brando and Burton are never entirely inept, but of all the performers, only Ewa Aulin in the title role comes off unstained-and that is because she is only called upon to look up, lie down and writhe her thighs. "Good Grief, it's Candy," says the ad for the film. The film itself says, Good Candy, it's Grief...
...weeks before the opening of their season, the Baltimore Bullets be decked the town with posters portraying determined-looking team members and bearing the line, WE'VE GOT A FEW SCORES TO SETTLE. The hoopla sounded nice but, since it was raised by a team that had finished last in its division for two straight years, nobody believed a word of it. Nobody, apparently, except the Bullets. Last week, with a league-leading 24-7 record, the once lowly Bullets were the surprise hotshots of the National Basketball Association...
...Free," the author of this disjointed but somehow engaging nonbook, is in reality Abbie Hoffman, 32, the wire-haired co-founder of the yippie movement. Regardless, the film has a nice little story and Hollywood can still handle these things with class now and then. A scene between Rock Hudson and Patrick McGoohan when the latter reveals the nature of the mission we've been wondering about for two hours is a model of well-written exposition, neatly paced and satisfying to all. Other crucial plot points crumble in treatment: the obligatory submarine flooding scene is telegraphed too early by deliberately distracting conversational small-talk injected suddenly into a script previously given over to cut-and-dried function. More irritating, 90 percent of the mechanics...
