...Soles, there's little to recommend Rock and Roll High School. Most of the jokes are silly, like this one--a fellow in Indian dress walks along the ticket line for the Ramones gig: "A scalper," one fan tells another knowingly. The soundtrack is good--music by Eno and Nick Lowe side by side with Alice Cooper and Todd Rundgren. (If you want to hear live Ramones recordings, though, don't buy this soundtrack album; get a double-album import called It's Alive, four uninterrupted sides of lobotomized thumping...
...March, however, Connally hopes to leap ahead with big victories in Florida and Illinois, thinking he can there eliminate his conservative challenger from California. "If I can nick Reagan," he says, "he will come down fast...
Based on former Footballer Peter Gent's good novel, the film shows this sadomasochistic world through the eyes of Phillip Elliott (Nick Nolte), a pass catcher with good hands and, in the view of the coaches and owners, a bad attitude. Elliott's insouciance springs from a developing conviction that he and his mates are exploited (if well-paid) field hands, risking their lives, or anyway their health, to assuage their owner's ego and their coach's desire to turn them into ciphers...

Fortified, he staggers through the Pro Football Day--wild parties, reckless hunting, chasing women. Does the pleasure make up for the pain? This is North Dallas Forty's existensial question. Phil Elliot, Nolte's latest in a series...
...Deep, most people dismissed Nick Nolte as a dumb blonde pretty-boy, a poor man's Robert Redford. But Nolte's not as dumb as he looks, and that's his fortune--always managing to act one notch more sensitive and intelligent than you think he's capable of. That's not much, and he gets away with a lot, until his "big" scene at the end of the movie, when he emotes and rocks and gesticulates like a marionette and babbles in an elaborately whiny voice. Mostly, though, he's pretty good--funny, spirited, with a tongue-in-cheek...
