Gentlemen Don't Wait. Biographer West (the wife of British Historian-Diplomat Harold Nicolson) has skillfully woven Mademoiselle's figure, with her private ardors and ironies, into the larger tapestry of the history, manners, and morals of Bourbon France. Contemporary readers are likely to be more startled by the manners than the morals. The Queen's own gentleman-in-waiting thought nothing of dropping the royal hand for a moment "pour alter pisser contre la tapis-serie." Garbage filled the rank Parisian streets, but the stench of the dandies at court was almost as overpowering. The plumed...
...twice-weekly meetings with the prince, Dr. Koizumi often read aloud from Harold Nicolson's biography King George the Fifth, for, like many Japanese liberals, he feels that the imperial family must reign, but not govern, much in the manner of the British royal family. The matter is complicated by the fact that Nicolson, 42, is also an M.P., who was previously in trouble with his local Bournemouth Conservative Association for opposing government policy on Suez (TiME, Feb. 2). Admitted a Conservative M.P. last week: "Lolita is the main issue. Suez has been replaced." Said a local politico: "A director of a firm intending to publish this vulgar...
...foray into Bournemouth like a military headquarters that has just learned of an enemy breakthrough. Party Chairman Lord Hailsham galloped off to Bournemouth posthaste. At week's end, in a tense, three-hour session with Bournemouth Tory leaders. Hailsham persuaded them to accept the hated Nigel Nicolson again, if a private postal poll shows that he would win a majority of the 7,500 Tory voters in the. constituency...
