Rarely is human society graced by a person whose heroic courage and raw emotional power move so many people that he threatens to crumble the walls of injustice. Three years ago, the free world was shocked when the Nigerian military dictatorship executed one such hero, the Ogoni Nigerian Ken Saro-Wiwa. The Ogoni people of Nigeria live in an oil-rich and once-fertile land, but they are a national minority susceptible to governmental abuse...
...tall, sleekly muscular and imposingly handsome, with a clean-shaven head and sloped, piercing eyes; his cheeks, however, are rough and pocked, the result of a long-ago lupus episode (something else he prefers not to discuss). Nor is he always comfortable talking about his parents. (His mother was Nigerian and his father Brazilian; both are dead.) Seal was born in London and grew up poor. Daily life in Nigeria deteriorated disastrously under Abacha's dictatorship as the economy and infrastructure crumbled. Unemployment and corruption inflamed ethnic animosity. The facts about Abiola became far less important to people than the image they could build around him of a democratic future they yearned to have...
...country that has known only nine years of civilian rule. One of the few politicians capable of uniting the nation might be recently released prisoner General Olusegun Obasanjo. Obasanjo has support both in the rebellious south and among his former colleagues in the military -- and he's the only Nigerian military ruler ever to have handed over power to an elected civilian government...
