...called President George W. Bush the devil, made no contribution to peace [Oct. 2]. Chávez tried to transform an important forum of debate into a circus. Maybe he thought that he was on Jon Stewart's Daily Show, or maybe he was trying to mimic Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, who banged the lectern with his shoe in the same forum. Both leaders were disrespectful to the delegates, U.N. officials and the U.N. as an institution that represents our ultimate hope for peace. Secretary-General Kofi Annan should take measures to avoid such occurrences in the future and uphold...

...excused the actor from his occasional flubbing of lines. His entire performance was tinged with an ironic humor that was absolutely delicious and would have been welcomed in even greater doses. The one problematic element came during the moments of dialogue between Barron and the prerecorded character of Nikita Ivanitch (the voice of producer Sniderman). The recording was stiff and unnatural. Johnson would have been better off employing a live voiceover instead, giving Barron the opportunity to interact in real-time with another actor. ...feel sorry for the people who live in a dull world where they can’t listen to the views of others.†In 1966, supporters of the protesters said that just as Americans would have supported student uprisings in Eastern Europe against a visiting Nikita Khrushchev, students should demonstrate against the “butchers of Vietnam.†But there is a time and place for throwing courtesy to the wind, and a commencement address by a (not particularly offensive) senator is not one. We should tolerate diversity, not mediocrity, and focus...
