But Japanese teachers, more than any other professional group, felt the burden of guilt for having trained their pupils in militarism. When the Nikkyoso was formed in 1947, one of its tenets was a pledge "never again to send our children to war," which teachers still take as a sacred creed...
...Japan had lost. Simultaneously, SCAP's Information and Education Section set out to fill Japan's schools with teachers avowedly opposed to prewar Japanese policy. Thus encouraged, most of Japan's educators reverted to the Marxist beliefs so many of them had held in the 1920s. Nikkyoso, the 600,000-member Japanese teachers union, soon fell under Marxist domination. Preached at in their classrooms, often encouraged to skip school for political demonstrations, a whole generation of Japanese has grown up in an atmosphere of reverse McCarthyism...

They companionably join Communists in a bewildering array of organizations with names like Youth and Student Struggle Council, Committee for Freedom of Expression, National Conference for Reopening of Japan-China Relations. They provide the intellectual leadership for such huge outfits as Nikkyoso, the 600,000-strong teachers union; Zengakuren, a nationwide student pressure group; and, most important of all, the ultra-left-wing labor union federation called Sohyo (3^ million members), which has backed many of the recent demonstrations...
