...great record. There is the never-released Ronettes' version of Harry Nilsson's "Paradise," which for years existed only as a rumor. And an unknown April Stevens solo cut - she was usually half of a brother-sister act with sibling Nino Tempo - called "Why Can't a Boy and Girl Just Stay In Love." There is an obscure B-side known as "Torpedo Rock," a deliberately obnoxious instrumental, typical of what Spector sometimes placed on flip sides so the impact of the A-side wouldn't be diluted...

...call the GSS effect, which means the Great Science Section that works here. Dick Thompson, who is based in Washington, wrote "Can We Save California?" Fred Golden, a TIME contributor, handled "Will We Meet E.T.?" Madeleine Nash, our senior science correspondent, has just finished a book on El Nino, so she was the ideal choice to write "Will We Control the Weather?" No region offers a more sobering picture of how volatility translates into vulnerability than Latin America. In 1999 it was nature that buffeted the region--El Nino, the effects of 1998's hurricanes Georges and Mitch, the floods of coastal Venezuela--but a collapse on Wall Street could have a no less devastating effect. Moises Naim, editor of the journal Foreign Policy, based in Washington, noted that 1999 set a series of dismal records for Latin America...

...judge sent Ovando to prison for 23 years after two anti-gang squad members, who had allegedly shot him multiple times, claimed he had threatened them with a rifle. L.A.P.D. partners Rafael Perez and Nino Durden had been working undercover in a vacant apartment in a building known as a gang hangout. They said they were forced to shoot Ovando when he burst in. Their story seemed a bit iffy--"He has a semiautomatic with a banana clip, yet they both manage to pull out their pistols and shoot?" asks Tamar Toister, who defended Ovando--but the testimony seemed persuasive...
