...beer, the pretzels and the kids' Reeboks, require something a little more human and uplifting. So NBC spent millions getting the heart-wrenching stories behind the stories, about 140 of them, on everyone from diver Mary Ellen Clark, whose cancer-stricken father made it to poolside, to the horse Nirvana II, which was an embarrassment to its Thoroughbred family--which traces its lineage to 1964 Preakness champ Northern Dancer--until giving up the track for a life of dressage and show jumping. To further nail the female audience, NBC brought back the soothing, soft John Tesh, formerly of Entertainment Tonight...
...came across as something fresh and different, in large part because it didn't try to come across as anything fresh or different. Modern rock needed some new life, figuratively and literally--Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder's misunderstood-misanthrope act got tired about five seconds after Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain's suicidally depressive lyrics turned out to be all too genuine. Hootie was embraced as an alternative to alternative, a straight-ahead zig to the posturing zag of the rest of contemporary rock, and Cracked Rear View, with its brawny, melodic, heartfelt songs, went on to become...
Meanwhile, back at the Columbia festival, the rain has finally stopped. The band takes the stage to a massive roar from the crowd, a Beatles in Liverpool, U2 in Dublin, Nirvana in Seattle hometown roar. Rucker screams his way through that last one, pulling and pawing at his shirt as if he's about to come...
Kurt Cobain is gone, but nobody is forgetting him. Cobain posthumously won his only Grammy last week, when Nirvana's last album, MTV Unplugged in New York, won for Best Alternative Music. Covers of Cobain's songs by other artists are also beginning to surface. The latest: a recording of All Apologies by jazz great Herbie Hancock...
...seems like few up-and-coming bands can avoid the Seattle connection, and Loud Lucy is no exception. Other influences on Breathe include Nirvana, if only because in late 1991, when Lane and Furar started to immerse themselves in the music scene of Chicago, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was everywhere. "Over Me," "Breathe" and "Clear World" all possess obsessive, driving guitarwork by Lane which is reminiscent of Nevermind. Hearing the drawn out and angst-ridden vocals, particularly those of "Clear World," one cannot help but think of Kurt Cobain. Overtones of Soundgarden also linger over a number of the tracks...
