...came across as something fresh and different, in large part because it didn't try to come across as anything fresh or different. Modern rock needed some new life, figuratively and literally--Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder's misunderstood-misanthrope act got tired about five seconds after Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain's suicidally depressive lyrics turned out to be all too genuine. Hootie was embraced as an alternative to alternative, a straight-ahead zig to the posturing zag of the rest of contemporary rock, and Cracked Rear View, with its brawny, melodic, heartfelt songs, went on to become...
Meanwhile, back at the Columbia festival, the rain has finally stopped. The band takes the stage to a massive roar from the crowd, a Beatles in Liverpool, U2 in Dublin, Nirvana in Seattle hometown roar. "Over Me," "Breathe" and "Clear World" all possess obsessive, driving guitarwork by Lane which is reminiscent of Nevermind. Hearing the drawn out and angst-ridden vocals, particularly those of "Clear World," one cannot help but think of Kurt Cobain. Overtones of Soundgarden also linger over a number of the tracks...
Cast your thoughts ahead to 30 years from now. Will our generation be the patrons of the symphony orchestras? I cannot imagine those who now listen exclusively to Nirvana and Live fixing a tie or donning a dress to attend a concert at an antiquated City Hall...
