...Shange's eyes, black men are going to wince. They are portrayed as brutal con men and amorous double-dealers. A segment called "Dark Phrases," featuring Janet League, telescopes a black wom an's experience, and in a cruel tale of love and blood lust called "A Nite With Beau Willie Brown," Trazana Beverley brings the audience to a culminating gasp of agony. An altogether excellent cast not only dances but delivers lines with a revivalist fervor that might have inspired Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the fiery furnace...

...latest crop of these plays is difficult to describe, but they seem more like fraternity-nite skits than ever. There is the revival of the thirties musical with staging by Busby Berkeley. There is the story of Noah and the flood adapted to spotlight Danny Kaye. Like desert dustballs, No No Nanette and Two by Two blow through New Haven, Washington, and Boston collecting whatever money and publicity they can find on the trail, and finally unravel their filthy mess on Broadway. The major part of Boston theater, especially with the disappearance of the Charles, is devoted to this publicity...
...Gayle at the Martinique last summer. That's funny, now. She didn't belong there. Daytona's Number One Psychedelic Nite Spot draws some junior high kids whose parents belong to Oceanside Country Club and to the Palmetto Club Juniors. (Mom or Dad let off Flea and Susy about nine on Main Street, and pick 'em up in their Toronado halfway through the Johnny Carson show. They couldn't have done that when the bikies ran the "Q," but there haven't been any busted lips or broken chairs for a couple of years since the town started shooting speed...
