Nixon shows no surprise that Frost had access to this previously undisclosed Colson tape. It was subpoenaed by Watergate Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski for use against Nixon's top aides in their criminal trial, but was not put into evidence. The implication of the tape is that Nixon???on his first day at work after the burglary?was already directing a cover-up effort. Now, for the first time in the days of interviewing, Nixon's speech begins to falter...

Whatever the damage done to Ford's standing by his clemency for Nixon???and much of it seems ultimately repairable?the controversy also hurt members of Ford's staff. As the only member of the Ford inner circle known to have supported the President's decision before it was announced, former Nixon Hand Alexander Haig was sullied. While Haig belittled his own role in that decision, other staffers resented the Nixon holdover and suspected his influence. Haig has been in frequent telephone contact with Nixon and Ziegler, talking to San Clemente at least three or four times weekly...

...that it blankets. Nixon got his best voter percentages in Nebraska in 1960 and 1968, and only a few other states did better for him in 1972. Yet the World-Herald concluded last week that Nixon should resign. A remarkable number of other major newspapers that had previously supported Nixon???including the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Kansas City Times and the Los Angeles Time?urged his removal from office. The nation's largest newspaper, the normally pro-Nixon New York Daily News, stopped short of demanding impeachment, but said the President's failure to cooperate with the House Judiciary Committee...

Undoubtedly at the grand jury's direction, members of Jaworski's staff also gave to Sirica a locked and bulging briefcase. It is believed to contain transcripts of White House tape recordings, documents and other evidence that was gathered painstakingly?and often despite dogged resistance from Nixon???by Jaworski and his fired predecessor, Archibald Cox. The evidence almost certainly is meant to support any charges made in the report against Nixon. The briefcase is also expected to reach the House impeachment investigators if that should be the course Sirica elects...
