Trying to establish those who opposed Dwight Eisenhower's, John F. Kennedy's, Richard Nixon's and Ronald Reagan's negotiations with the enemy as the same people - the anti-engagers - is ludicrous. Everything a President does is opposed by someone for some reason. The larger point is that we must negotiate through strength, a fact Obama seems not to understand. Neither did Jimmy Carter. Obama's willingness to withdraw from Iraq while on the brink of victory and to talk without condition to the perpetrators of much of the violence is foolhardy and dangerous. ...WATCHMEN, directed by Zack Snyder (300) and due in theaters next March. Based on Alan Moore's graphic novel--which TIME's critics named one of the 100 best novels since the magazine's founding in 1923--the film is set in an alternate 1980s world where Richard Nixon is still President, cold war tensions run high and superheroes are being murdered. Snyder's teaser showed arresting visuals of the giant blue Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup) atomizing some Viet Cong, fellow crusaders Nite Owl II (Patrick Wilson) and Silk Spectre II (Malin Akerman) kissing in front of a mushroom cloud...
...Paulson, 62, came to the job with a bit of Washington experience, dating to the Nixon White House. He had just spent seven years running Goldman Sachs, the current cream of Wall Street firms (and also the place that prepared Robert Rubin for his successful 1990s tenure at Treasury). But the key to understanding Paulson's approach is that he spent the bulk of his career not as a manager but as an investment banker. What a good investment banker does is build relationships - chiefly with the CEOs of companies whose business he is courting, but also with anybody else...
Some of the Watchmen footage was a nearly panel-by-panel representation of the graphic novel, which is set in an alternate 1980s world where Richard Nixon is still President, cold war tensions are high, and superheroes are being murdered. Snyder's teaser showed arresting visuals of the giant blue superhero Doctor Manhattan (Billy Crudup) atomizing some Vietcong, fellow crusaders Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson) and Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) kissing while a mushroom cloud erupts in the background and the coarse Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) plunging to his death from a window, with the blood-spattered smiley face - the book...
Fans also got a long look at the shifting inkblots on the mask of Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley), the unveiling of the flying Owl Ship, a 1950s photo shoot of the fresh-faced superheroes and a very realistic-looking old Nixon. Snyder, who is currently wrestling with a three-hour version of the movie, said, "We had to cut out some bits that were more actiony" to keep Watchmen from running closer to five hours...
