...group of scientists have petitioned the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences regarding what they call an omission among this year’s winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics, half of which Mallinckrodt Professor of Physics Roy J. Glauber ’45-’46 won for his contributions to quantum optics.Led by Ranjit Nair, the director of the Centre for Philosophy and Foundations of Science in New Delhi, India, the authors of the petition contend that E. C. George Sudarshan, professor of physics at the University of Texas at Austin, should have been recognized along with...
Einstein explained it a century ago and won a Nobel Prize. Now we make use of it every day--inefficiently. It's called the photoelectric effect: light can produce electricity. Electricity produces light. But solar energy still costs more than the fossil- fuel variety. And our lightbulbs and fluorescent tubes waste half their energy...
...Last night was no different. Face to face with the most admired woman in America, Dave was ceaselessly devotional, lobbing questions about Oprah's many good works, all but nominating her for the Nobel Peace Prize and any other she might fancy. At the end of her stint, he took her by the hand - I'm saying the Dark Lord of Cool held Oprah's hand, anyone's hand, for two solid minutes - and escorted her down the block to the Broadway Theatre, for The Color Purple's opening night, as gawkers behind police barriers cheered the lovely couple. While I applaud Nobel-prizewinning physicist Eric Cornell's evenhanded call for moderation in the intelligent-design debate [Nov. 14], I long to see an article that examines the causality of the controversy and suggests how it might be resolved. Among my friends who are adherents of the doctrine of God-inspired intelligent design, the issue isn't one of conflicting scientific theories but of a desire to make science work for them in the effort to live a purposeful and successful life. We need to focus on finding a solution rather than repeating the same arguments for 100 years...
