What tickled Terre Haute-and two dozen other towns-was an English-language version of a little-known Mozart opera called Merry Masquerade (originally La Finta Giardiniera). Written when the composer was 18, it lampoons 18th century operatic oddities in their own terms: a nobleman thinks his wife is dead and plans to marry a pretty young thing who is actually in love with an untitled poet. Everybody else in the story is in love with somebody else, including the wife, who is really alive but disguised as a lady gardener in order to win back her count. Most everyone...

Last year a vacationing Italian engineer and nobleman dragged his gaze away from Capri's ubiquitous Bikini bathing suits long enough to notice some eels at play. Those particular eels, thought the Marchese Domingo de Mistura, need fresh water. Their presence was an unmistakable sign that there must be fresh-water springs under the island. With little more than that to go on, Mistura persuaded local and Italian officials to help him drill a well. Last week, after five months of digging through folds of hard rock near Anacapri, he struck fresh water at a point 171 feet below...

An Italian nobleman, the Marchese Guido Serra di Cassano, was decorating a town house by buying wholesale lots of pictures at a few pounds apiece. Browsing about one run-down little antique shop, he spied a medium-sized (29 in. by 24½ in.) canvas, showing an aged man in dark brown coat and dark velvet hat, staring moodily out at the world with large, pained eyes. The dealer was glad to include the picture in the sale for an extra $25. Then the marquis had it cleaned, and experts...

One of Communism's great wolves had fallen, and the lesser wolves were tearing at his carcass. ...Bandits of Corsica (Global Productions; United Artists) has another go at the creaking old dual-identity plot. This time Richard Greene is cast as 1) a gypsy knife thrower, and 2) a dashing nobleman who espouses (circa 1830) the cause of Corsican freedom against French Tyrant Raymond Burr. It seems that the nobleman and the gypsy are Siamese twins. Though severed by surgery, they are still tied to each other by a strange spiritual bond. Before long, the twins join forces against the tyrant who finds himself seeing double. Additional complications set in when twin No. 1 (the gypsy) develops...
