...Washington. There were only some 25 political plums to be picked in the Islands, but plenty of hungry Democrats wanted them. Maryland's Senator Millard E. Tydings quietly wangled a Virgin Islands job as government attorney for a Jewish constituent named Eli Baer. Island Police Director Michael J. Nolan shortly reported that CWA funds were being diverted to the purchase of refrigerator parts, the repair of Government House radios, the hiring of taxicabs for parades. At once Attorney Baer set out to investigate the administration of public funds in the Islands. He turned up screaming with 101 charges of graft...
...Informer, of which the hero is a drunken, overgrown, dull-witted and cowardly Dublin bully, is a daring experiment and considerably more. Adapted by Dudley Nichols from Liam O'Flaherty's novel of the same name, it tells with superb, ironic power the story of Gypo Nolan (Victor McLaglen) and one night, his last, in the murky slums of Dublin. Ingalls then here down and the game ended with a well-earned 5-0 victory...
Gentlewoman (by John Howard Lawson; Group Theatre, producer). The heroine (Stella Adler) of this play is a soft Park Avenue widow who announces, with unjustified assurance: "My head is full of epigrams and my heart is full of tears." The hero (Lloyd Nolan), a communistic Casanova, replies, "You are smeared with perfume and emotion." As might be anticipated, their alliance is not lasting. At the end of the play he is headed for Iowa City, plotting to become a nuisance to the government. She, unmarried still, is planning an accouchement. She hopes her child will forget the informality...
