Usage:

Where all the films are removed, the remaining glass is a nonconductor. When a section of tantalum remains, it acts as a resistor. A strip of gold and chromium is a good conductor, and serves as a thin wire. Capacitors can be made by covering tantalum with an oxide that acts as an insulator and then laying on a fresh film of gold. To make a complete circuit, tiny silicon transistors are electrically bonded to the proper sites. Complicated as it is, the process is wholly automatic, and up to one hundred microcircuits can be manufactured on a piece...

...Lemnitzer moved like a nonconductor. In December he smoothly headed off a drive by the new civilian space agency (NASA) to take over Huntsville, but he promised to serve any NASA needs. His own strongest efforts had long since been thrown behind development of more earthy necessities, e.g., a mortar-spotting radar in 1953, a plastic grenade launcher this year. His steady emphasis on combat readiness as top priority promises to scale the Army's space push down to manageable proportions. In word and deed he seemed just the steady old pro the Army needed to get back...

Aluminum has so far not proved a completely satisfactory substitute. Aluminum electrical wiring oxidizes on contact with moisture and turns into a nonconductor. Experimental aluminum automobile radiators have become crusted by the alkaline water found in most of the U.S. But last week, as the supply of copper grew increasingly short, there was renewed talk of a turn toward aluminum. Reynolds Metals told stockholders that big electrical companies were inquiring about aluminum for electrical wire and that automobile manufacturers were still considering the light metal to replace copper in radiators. Reported an Alcoa official: "We're getting inquiries from...

Mica, which laymen know as isinglass, is mainly used in peacetime as a nonconductor for electrical equipment. When war hit the Far East, almost everything about mica immediately became a military secret. Reason: most high-grade mica comes from India, and without it no tank, ship or airplane would be of much use, since mica is essential for radio condensers, and there have been no acceptable substitutes...
