...nondescript little whitewashed office at Tel Aviv University, the telephone suddenly rings. The 1,600-mile connection to Moscow has been made. At the other end of the line is Physics Professor Mark Azbel, 41, a former department head at Moscow's prestigious Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics. He is on a hunger strike because of the Soviets' refusal to let him emigrate, but over the telephone he now begins in fluent English a lecture for his Israeli students on "An Approach to Macrophysics and Condensed Matter Physics." A tape recorder takes it all down for the fall...
...major problem is one of obsolescence. Bond movies can no longer rely on the Cold War for accessible plots. No more SMERSH or SPECTRE. Consequently, Live and Let Die is no more than an elaborate heroin swindle. The movie's Mr. Big turns into an ordinary villain, and a nondescript one at that. He is at no time believable...
...raids were staged the day after Arab guerrillas had attacked Israeli targets in Cyprus (see following story). But the detailed planning had actually begun a month earlier, when two nondescript men and a dark-haired woman in her mid-30s visited Beirut on Western passports. Agents of Mossad, the Israeli external-intelligence network, they laid the groundwork for the extraordinary invasion. They were helped by Israeli agents living in Beirut, including some who had infiltrated the fedayeen movement itself and others who arrived later. To get ready for the commandos, six agents went to Avis and a local firm called...
...story is too traditionally Truffaut -- a confrontation of innocence (equated with intellect) and brazen, vulgar ignorance that becomes a gutter sophistication. The ending, with Camille's inexplicable ascendance and her final betrayal, are barely believable. Truffaut assists her with a foil in Helene; nondescript where Camille is vibrant, proper where she is vulgar, and whose studied disapproval of the experiment masks incipient love. At the end of the film she and Camille pass at the jailer's desk during visiting hours; Camille on her way out, Helene unable to get in. As the film ends, she types the manuscript...
...Churchill was deceived at first, so were most of his contemporaries. Sir Winston, in fact, was some years ahead of other historians in his reevaluation. Truman was one of those public men whose reputations flourish only after years of retirement. His nondescript appearance, his shoot-from-the-hip partisanship, his taste for mediocre cronies who tainted the record with scandal -all the things that made him seem too small for the office-dwindled in importance with the passing decades. What loomed larger was a sense of the man's courage, a realization that he faced and made more great...
