...often it is taken for granted that "success" means beating others to the top of our chosen field--seldom, if ever, is success seen as raising good kids. My friends outlined, step-by-step, how they wanted their lives to proceed after graduation. None included a family in that picture. That shocked me. I grew up believing the most important thing any two people can do is raise children. As a friend recently put it, "to love is to live," and what better way to love than to raise children...
Starovoitova's killers are in little danger of being brought to justice. None of the well-planned murders of prominent people--such as St. Petersburg's deputy mayor, who was shot down by snipers in 1997--has been solved. But the planned political violence is having an effect. Calls are growing for the government to invoke emergency powers. Prime Minister Yevgeni Primakov has rejected such demands, but he is under pressure to do something. What he can achieve with a system that is riddled with corruption, however, is open to question...
...production staff were faced with the problem of finding a space big enough for the large cast and schnazzy dance numbers a good production of Guys and Dolls would require. "In most other theaters there are already headsets and lights and sound systems--and there's none of that in here. They gave me the key to the door and said `Good luck.'" Even before they could get the key there was the problem of funding. "If you're in the Loeb you have HRDC behind you, or if you're in Gilbert and Sullivan you have G&S behind you. We didn't have any of that...
...result can only be called jarring. Americana also has its share of positively dreadful, not quite convincing singing, such as Remora's rendition of "Rock Island Line." Granted that these songs do show Cash's transcendence of musical genres which the album claims to bring. But none of it is an improvement on the genuine article; this is one album not really worth getting unless you're a diehard Cash fan who wants to see how far you can push the envelope...
