...career (but then, so can English or physics); government is the major of choice for budding politicians; any number of humanities and social science departments contain dozens of would-be lawyers; and a science degree can be the first step to a lucrative job in industry or technology. But none of these is explicitly vocational; none is comparable to Northwestern's journalism program or MIT's classes in accounting...

Unfortunately, none of the albums under consideration here are very good. In particular, Michael's new CD, Older, is hypocritical and dreary. The singer has been rebelling against his teenybopper past as co-leader of Wham! for some time now (his last album, which attempted a more serious tone, was titled Listen Without Prejudice Vol. I), but on this new CD he is not only a rebel without a cause, he also lacks energy and wit. Construction is ideology: building has always been employed, also unsuccessfully, to cement permanent ownership...

...Arafat and King Hussein will meet in Jordan on Wednesday. "This meeting is a clear reaction of concern," says MacLeod. "It would appear that it may be the first step of an important move towards Arab unity and solidarity in the face of the expected shifts in Israel." Although none of the leaders, other than Arafat, have anything to lose in the short term if the peace process is delayed, they all face increasing pressures in the long-term. "In the absence of peace agreements which move things forward, both politically and economically, the problem of Islamic militancy and terrorism...
