...this paradise stepped a group of women. There were Mrs. John Jay White, Mrs. Henry Villard (wife of the journalist-financier Henry Villard, daughter of William Lloyd Garrison, famed abolitionist, mother of Oswald Garrison Villard, editor of the Nation), Mrs. J. Sergeant Cram, Mrs. Edward Thomas and many another. None of the ladies brought her children or any other children...

...Schacht was obliged to admit that he had written the song-poem in question, that he had sold it to the publisher many years ago "for a song." None the less he started suit "to protect the dignity of the Reichsbank"?demanded that The Minstrel's Waltz be suppressed once and for all. Shrewd lawyers opined that the suit will certainly defeat its aim?if that be suppression of publicity...

What Picassos, Rousseaus, Matisses will crown the next decade? None of the critics who choked down their giggles as they studied the pictures of potentially immortal Independents could very well say. There were too many queer ones, new ones, sad ones, naughty ones, for a measured judgment. There was, for instance, a picture by a Russian, one David Burliul, in which he visualized the vibrations of modern city life in what he defined as "radio style." Everyone must take a week's vacation and read "An American Tragedy"; nothing short of a colossal achievement. Simultaneously other critics of an equal eminence rise in anger from their wrath on the labored, Teutonic, Kolossal opus. Written over a period over ten years, this novel, hurriedly completed in a few months, scarcely re-touched, and condensed not at all, has been published in a rough, raw, dull, and barbaric fulsomeness. Let us regurgitate, they...

...Maillol is described as the Swinburne of stone. He is said to have recaptured the simple purity of the Greeks and to have infused into it a pagan breath of strength and wild disorder. Which serves very well as blurb, and which, strangely enough, is very true. There is none of of the unfinished effect of Rodin, none of the power created by blocks of chaotic stone, but a curious similarity, none the less, in treatment. The little terra cotta statuettes are worth much more than a passing glance...
