...last month at the Charles Hotel. There was that Abercrombie & Fitch-type catalog lauding the achievements of Harvard women. There was that October celebration of 25 years of co-residency in the Yard--a relatively un-newsworthy achievement considering that the houses have been integrated for 28 years, but nonetheless an opportunity for President Neil L. Rudenstine to pose for the cameras with proud, prominent Harvard women. Thrown in for good measure, all year long there's been a speaker series featuring women leaders in industry and academia. And lest we forget, Harvard's new president of the Board...

...blacks as watermelon-eaters, given the loaded image of this poster and the stereotype it evokes of Southern blacks, the Lowell House dining hall may be an inappropriate place to hang it, particularly because it was purchased by the former dining hall manager as a nice piece of decoration. Nonetheless, these issues are debatable. Political correctness is somewhat on the wane, but we are still hypersensitive to offending people. So the instant a student charges that the poster hanging in her dining hall is "racist," it is immediately removed--without discussion or an examination of the relevant context...

...Just before Easter the group experienced its first First Amendment conflict: whether it could hang posters on all school walls like other non-school-sponsored clubs. Patrick Henry principal Paul McMahan eventually decreed that putting up posters is off limits to everyone, leading to some resentment against the Christians.
