Until vaccines become available, many doctors urge that a combination of condoms and spermicides be used to prevent sexual transmission of AIDS. Laboratory tests show that nonoxynol-9, the active ingredient in many U.S. spermicides, can prevent the virus from reproducing. A more potent product, under development by Exovir in Great Neck, N.Y., would contain both nonoxynol- 9 and alpha interferon, a combination that compounds the killing effect. Invented by Bruce Vorhauer, 41, a biomedical engineer, the new product is a soft polyurethane sponge 5.5 cm wide and 2 cm thick, permeated with a common spermicide, nonoxynol 9, that has been on the market for 20 years. The product combines the barrier aspects of the diaphragm with the principal advantages of the less effective male condom.
