Maybe it's because I'm one of those fringe libertarians, but it seems to me that there are ways to encourage volunteerism without the dubious help of state and federal governments. Significant growth of volunteerism and the proliferation of nonprofit start-ups are good signs that people have already found avenues for service without burdensome bureaucracy or tax-funded carrots. Even if a national-service system ends up costing only the relative pittance Stengel cited, the cost would be in addition to those of the Iraq war and federal prisons, not in their stead. Whether through conscription, graduation requirements...
...future is now. The collective of adults and children occupies 175 acres (70 hectares) of bucolic land, including an independent organic farm that supplies much of its produce. The property was purchased by a nonprofit organization formed to help shape the community; the board of directors, which includes both villagers and outsiders, plots the direction of EVI with the consent of residents. The 60 tidy homes, all duplexes to save energy, are privately owned by the residents, who pay a monthly fee for the upkeep of common buildings and future capital projects, like a shared root cellar for storing vegetables...
...pupils to whatever schools the parents choose. It's a voucher system in all but name that blows up the monopoly of a traditional school district. In the process, they have attracted the best school operators from around the nation to show what they can do, ranging from national nonprofit charter networks such as KIPP schools to for-profit companies like Edison Schools...

"In China, the Mekong is not the same river as it is down in the basin," notes Eric Baran, a research scientist based in Phnom Penh for the nonprofit World Fish Center. "Here in Cambodia, it is a matter of life and death. In China, it is just another river - and not even a very major...
...they want to. According to an AARP survey, 80% of Americans between 50 and 60 said they were planning to work during retirement. "Many seniors are interested in careers that are influenced by a spirit of service. Over half want to work in the education, health-care and nonprofit sector," says Marc Freedman, founder and CEO of Civic Ventures and co-founder of Experience Corps. Experience Corps is the largest AmeriCorps program for people over 55; it consists of teams of 10 to 15 people working to improve reading for students in kindergarten through third grade. Just as AmeriCorps members...
