...broken, but don't worry--Marty Tenenbaum knows how to fix it. Tenenbaum is chairman of CommerceNet, a nonprofit organization based in Palo Alto, Calif., and devoted, unsurprisingly, to promoting commerce on the Net. And his silver bullet, an obscure design language called XML, is about to transform cyberspace...
...swooped out of the Big Sky. "Who is Bill Yellowtail?" it opened. "He preaches family values, but he took a swing at his wife." Yellowtail lost. A year later he's still trying to figure out who really took a swing at him. The ad's sponsor was a nonprofit group with a do-gooder name, Citizens for Reform. But the deeper mystery was how the organization knew to air a domestic incident more than 20 years old. Republican documents obtained by TIME help piece together this puzzle. What they point to is the possibility that G.O.P. candidates and groups...
...last weeks of the '96 race, Americans for Tax Reform, a nonprofit group headed by Grover Norquist, paid for a campaign burnishing the Republican image on the Medicare issue as well as an ad attacking New Jersey Democratic Senator Bob Torricelli. Here we go again! The zany twist is that the report isn't the work of Newt Gingrich or Jesse Helms; it's the loving handiwork of the NEA itself. Luuu...
Senate Democrats are poring over documents from BOB DOLE's campaign that they allege contain strong evidence of illegal coordination between the Dole effort and supposedly independent nonprofit groups in last year's election. The documents turned up on a computer hard drive that went with a Dole campaign aide to her new job at a law firm. The 200 or so pages were delivered late Friday to Senator Fred Thompson's committee investigating 1996 campaign-finance abuses; more are expected this week. They include notes of meetings and strategy memos dealing with the Christian Coalition, the Americans...
