As described by Dr. Thomas Addison in 1849, that disease is a rare, acute adrenal tuberculosis (signs: extreme lethargy, deep skin pigmentation) that generally ends in death. Doctors nowadays often apply the name to nontubercular, nonfatal adrenal insufficiency.
