...well--this idea of an environment which kills you and saves you at the same time. The thing that makes you crazy has turned you into something that wouldn't last a minute on the outside. Here are three enlisted men--lifers--and they're caught in camp in Norfolk without a war, awaiting their "orders." First there's the kid--the big, gawky out-of-it one from high school who joined the Navy to find his manhood but only found "men" who made more fun of him. ...right there. The youngest sailor is on his way to an eight-year prison term for trying to boost $40 from a collection box belonging to the favorite charity of the C.O.'s wife. The 'lifers" (career men) who have been assigned to escort him from the Norfolk naval base to the brig in Portsmouth, N.H., despise their job. Edelman stated that I was "100 per cent discomfited" during our hours at Norfolk, and quoted my supposed agitation over having received the "sad story" of the prisoners' lives, simply because I am the only woman on the squad. When I spoke to Mr. Edelman, I said nothing of the kind. Rather, I told him that I had discussed personal, emotional issues with the prisoners, as opposed to academic subjects. This was not only due to my being female, but also to the fact that I had participated in this activity last year, and was already acquainted with...
