Although everybody knows how the movie must end, director James Cameron drains the tension by framing the story of the Titanic through the eyes of Rose (Kate Winslet), who tells about her romance with the impoverished passenger Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio). The two run the events of normal cinematic romance, and Cameron's script presents the lead actors with incredible cliches. Each of the other characters represents a segment of society rather than a person. As the ship breaks apart and its passengers choose between life and death, Titanic achieves an epic grandeur that the film may not deserve. Overall...
...ingenious system begins to falter, my room returns to its normal dim self. The light has become a yellow that isn't quite white and at times even seems brown--which is a lot like black. The darkness is creeping in, leaving me squinting inches from the page. Extensive searches of the halogen bulbs and considerations of the (negligible) overhead brightness have come up with nothing. Furthermore, Oppenheim's argument that "normal, sane men are not confused by their experiences with poster girls, seedy restaurants or gentleman's magazines" is problematic. While many men can distinguish between the "mass market, two-dimensional" image of women that they enjoy purely for aesthetic reasons and the world of "three-dimensional women," I am not convinced that everyone is adept at distinguishing the media image of women from the real image of women. The tendency to view members of a particular gender as objects in the imagined world can easily filter into the "real world" causing a situation where...
