...plot's weaknesses are punctuated by the script's unbelievably stilted nature. The lines delivered are not normal dialogue: What would normally be inferred from speech has become speech itself. When a character acts haughtily, another points to him and says, "He is arrogant." In discussing Merlyn's ability to use his power for evil, a character simply says, "He is a bad man." The absence of finesse and subtlety in the script manages to deflate most scenes, transforming supposedly serious scenes into laughable displays of overacting. Consequently, Merlyn has the dramatic tension of a "Saved by the Bell" episode...
...perhaps the dour Harvard founders would have simply started UC Santa Cruz instead, because the Boston weather yesterday seemed more like the California school's traditional climate than the normal chilly New England rain...
Those legislative difficulties could pale in comparison to the ones Clinton may face after the 1994 elections. Losses of even two or three seats in the Senate and 20 or so in the House, regarded as normal for the President's party at midterm, would shave the Democrats' margins so thin as to perhaps bring back legislative gridlock. Greater losses could virtually end Clinton's chances for getting any important legislation passed, and the elections last week indicate that is a distinct possibility. Very far from a certainty, of course: a recent quickening in the economic recovery, if it continues...
