The Yardlings, following the pace set by the varsity, defeated Dartmouth, 25 to 31. Art Reider, the freshman captain, was first in the time of 14:31. Other crimson runners in the first five included Dave Norris, third; and Ralph Perry, fourth.
Ralph Perry and Dave Norris, two of McCurdy's promising freshmen, led the field in their race, with Perry recording a time of 16:00.9 for the 3-mile distance. The Yardlings had 18; Penn, 52; and Columbia 62.
Providence, with its first three freshmen all finishing in amazingly good times, edged the Crimson Yardlings, 25-31. B.U. was third with 85. After the first three Rhode Island runners came Art Reider, Ralph Perry, Dave Norris, and French Anderson of the Crimson.
Art Reider and Dave Norris, two of the very promising Yardling runners, placed first and second yesterday with good times of 15:06.8 and 15:18 for the 2.8 mile course. Other placers for the Crimson were French Anderson, fifth; Mike Liles, seventh; and John Carpenter, tenth.
The freshman team will also open its season today against Massachusetts: The Yardlings who McCurdy has singled out for mention include Ralph Perry, Pete Reider, John Carpenter, Dave Norris, and French Anderson.
